The weekend’s most tantalising fixture sees two sides licking the wounds of first-round defeats collide. The defending champions Leicester City host Arsenal, the side that beat them twice last season and finish runners-up. There’s no reason for panic, especially not after just a couple of league games, but defeat for either side could install a sense of reality to the illusory optimism that inevitably appears at the beginning of every season.
In Leicester’s case, another loss might just be the signal that last season will have to be cherished as a one-off miracle that can never happen again. In Arsenal’s case, it’s thousands of blameful fingers pointing in the direction of Arsene Wenger for his failure to show urgency both in the transfer market and in his decision to leave important first-team players out of the opening matches due to fitness concerns. A case could even be made for stubbornness from Arsene Wenger; long-term injuries to key players Danny Welbeck and Per Mertesacker have done seemingly nothing to change his stance on transfer reinforcements. In the event of a draw, perhaps those pessimistic beliefs could take a back seat, at least for now.
